EDUCATION
School success and future success are closely linked. United Way's work in education is about helping kids succeed by making sure that all children enter school ready to learn - and that they have the supports they need to stay in school and graduate.
Success By 6 works with child care providers to help them deliver the best possible early learning experience to the children in their care. Since 2001, 59 child care providers have received national accreditation; 7,500 children in early childhood classrooms received better care because their teachers received training and mentoring through Success By 6. Closing the Gap in Student Performance integrates health, human, and social services in 6 Buffalo Public Schools so that students can concentrate on learning. From mid-year 2006-07 to mid-year 2007-08, students in those 6 schools demonstrated a 3% increase in their GPA - showing that Closing the Gap is helping them focus on their academic success. We also invest in an array of early childhood and youth programs at local agencies. These programs provide high-quality early care; help youth build the personal assets they need; provide tutoring or mentoring; or help increase academic performance, all with a focus on high school graduation.
