Not For Profit Resource Center
New Not For Profits
In this time of limited funds, we discourage new not for profits from forming. To start a new Not For Profit agency costs money, generates paperwork and takes time. You will probably do most or all of these things, and more, just to get running:
- Pay legal expenses for Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws
- File documents to incorporate with the New York State Secretary of State
- File documents for 501c3 tax exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service
- File documents for New York State sales tax exemption
- File documents for local property tax exemption
- Wait to get approval on the documents, hoping they are approved the first time
- Hold board meetings and take formal minutes
- Keep track of money and establish a banking relationship
- Hire employees, do payroll, and comply with employment regulations
To help you start to deliver services without having to form a new agency, the Not For Profit Resource Center, an initiative of the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, can link you with an existing nonprofit agency. You may find that you can serve people more effectively by helping an already established agency than by starting a new one.
