City of Buffalo Proclaims February 11 as 211 Day, Recognizing United Way’s Essential Community Resource

BUFFALO, NY, February 11, 2025 – Today, February 11th (2/11), marks National 211 Day, celebrating the lifeline that connects millions of people across the U.S. and Canada to essential services. In recognition of the critical role 211 WNY plays in the Buffalo and Erie County community, the City of Buffalo has officially proclaimed February 11 as 211 Day.

Led by United Way of Buffalo & Erie County and operated locally by Visually Impaired Advancement (VIA), 211 WNY provides free, confidential support 24/7, connecting individuals and families to resources such as housing assistance, food support, healthcare, and more. In 2024 alone, 211 WNY handled over 60,000 referrals, demonstrating the community’s ongoing need for access to essential services.

“211 is an unmatched, go-to resource that provides connection and support for people facing life’s challenges,” said Trina Burruss, President and CEO of United Way of Buffalo & Erie County. “We’re proud to celebrate 211 Day, not only to raise awareness for this vital resource, but to honor the tireless work of the 211 WNY call specialists who provide support to our community members.”

Beyond day-to-day support, 211 WNY plays a crucial role during times of crisis, including natural disasters, ensuring accurate, vetted information reaches those in need while keeping 911 lines open for physical emergencies. 211 provides non-judgmental, empathetic assistance to ensure that no one in Western New York has to navigate challenges alone.

During 211 Day, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County encourages residents to:

  • Call or visit 211WNY.org if they or someone they know needs help.
  • Share 211 widely with their neighbors, family, and friends to connect others to help and supports.
  • Advocate to local policymakers for the importance of and need to strengthen 211.

For more information or to get connected to local resources, call 211 or visit 211wny.org.
